A First meeting

Read the prospect’s ledger before you meet.

Ask a prospect for a general ledger export from Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage 50 or Pandle. One analysis gives you their profit and loss, balance sheet, working capital and trends, so the first conversation is about their business, not your qualifications.

The statements and ratios are textbook formulae applied to the client’s own transactions, so every figure can be traced back to the ledger. Present them as observations. “Receivables days rose from 32 to 47” is a fact the client can check; what to do about it is your conversation to have.

Forecasts, valuation ranges and RiQ’s written commentary are estimates. They are there for you to review and put in your own words, not to hand over unread.

Beyond the statements, the same analysis carries a DuPont breakdown of return on equity, the cash conversion cycle, break-even and cost-volume-profit, and anomaly detection that grades findings as critical, medium or low. The formulae behind each ratio are in the financial ratios guide; how to export and upload a general ledger is step by step.

B Engagement letter

A management accounts service with a clear scope.

A management accounts service works when the client knows exactly what arrives each month. LedgerIQ’s modules map straight onto the schedule of services in an engagement letter, so what you promise is what the pack contains.

D Valuation and exit

Business valuation services, from the same ledger.

The business valuation module runs six methods side by side, starts from multiples for the client’s sector, and runs a 10,000-iteration Monte Carlo simulation over the discounted cash flow, so the range you quote shows its own uncertainty. An exit readiness score explains why the business sits where it does.

An indicative range is what most valuation conversations need first: before a sale, a shareholder leaving, succession, refinancing or a dispute. It is not a formal valuation for a court, a tax return or a transaction; that remains the work of a qualified valuer, and the module is a sound starting point for one. For business valuation accountants in the UK, it turns accounting business valuation work into the same monthly cycle as the management accounts: the figures come from the ledger the practice already keeps.

E Assurance

Forensic tests, when a ledger needs a closer look.

For independent examinations, due diligence or a client who suspects something is wrong, LedgerIQ carries an examination pack and eight forensic modules, plus anomaly detection and a financial health score.

  • Audit exhibitsThe findings, laid out as exhibits.

Materiality = max( £5,000 , 2% of revenue , 0.5% of total assets )

Anomaly detection grades findings by materiality, not just as statistical outliers: critical, medium and low. The financial health score blends the Altman Z′ score for private companies (40%), the Piotroski F-score (35%) and liquidity (25%) into a rating out of 100.

Questions

Advisory work, answered.

What practices ask about running a management accounts service, board packs and business valuation services on LedgerIQ. More in the LedgerIQ FAQ.

What is a management accounts service?

A management accounts service is an accountancy practice producing a client’s management accounts on a schedule, usually monthly or quarterly: a profit and loss against budget or last year, a balance sheet, cash, key ratios and a short commentary, so the owner can run the business on current figures rather than wait for the year-end accounts.

LedgerIQ produces the pack from the client’s general ledger. The practice reviews it, adds its own judgement and sends it in the firm’s brand.

What does a management accounts service usually include?

Most packs open with a summary and the period’s headline figures, then the profit and loss, the balance sheet, cash and working capital, key ratios and trends, and a page of commentary. Some add a cash flow forecast, budget against actual or KPIs agreed with the client.

LedgerIQ’s report composer has Management Accounts and Board Pack templates, starting selections of modules you can add to or trim, so the scope in the engagement letter and the contents of the pack can match.

How much does it cost to produce management accounts with LedgerIQ?

A full LedgerIQ analysis of one ledger is 1,000 credits, and reopening that dashboard later with View Financial Analysis is free; uploading the file again is a new analysis. Practice Essential (£78 a month) includes 50,000 credits a month, Practice Pro (£158) 150,000 and Enterprise (£398) 500,000. What the practice charges its clients is the practice’s own decision.

Which accounting software do client ledgers have to come from?

LedgerIQ reads the general ledger exports from Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage 50 and Pandle, and reads an IQ Books ledger live, with no export. Other exports are not recognised.

What is a business valuation used for?

Usually a sale or purchase, a shareholder joining or leaving, succession planning, raising finance, or a dispute such as a divorce settlement. The purpose matters: a formal valuation for a court, a tax return or a transaction is the work of a qualified valuer, while an indicative range is often enough to start a conversation about value or exit planning.

LedgerIQ’s business valuation module gives the practice that indicative range, with the workings, to build a business valuation service on.

What are the main business valuation methods?

LedgerIQ runs six, side by side: an EBITDA multiple; a seller’s discretionary earnings (SDE) multiple, for owner-run businesses; a revenue multiple; discounted cash flow; capitalisation of earnings; and net assets. It weights them by sector into one value, and runs a 10,000-iteration Monte Carlo simulation over the DCF inputs to show how wide the range really is.

In the UK, accountants commonly use the same methods for business valuation services, choosing the weighting that suits the business and the purpose.

Is a business worth three times profit?

Sometimes, but the multiple depends on the sector, the size, the risk and what “profit” means. LedgerIQ starts from sector ranges: for example 4.0 to 6.5 times EBITDA for professional services, 3.0 to 5.0 for construction and 8.0 to 15.0 for technology and SaaS businesses, across twelve sectors. It also scores exit readiness (growth, predictability, margin stability, cash generation, debt and more) to show why a business sits at the top or the bottom of its range.

How much does it cost to get a business valued?

It depends on the purpose and who does it. A formal, signed valuation report from a qualified valuer is priced as professional work. An indicative valuation inside LedgerIQ is part of the same 1,000-credit analysis that produces the management accounts, so a practice can offer one without a separate tool.

What is a board pack?

A board pack is the set of reports a company’s directors read before a board meeting: the results, the financial position, cash, the main risks and a commentary, so the meeting can spend its time on decisions rather than on finding the figures.

Is LedgerIQ board pack software?

Yes. The full board pack (one click from the overview, or Full Board Pack in the composer) runs in this order: executive summary, risk flags (when there are any), RiQ’s executive commentary, profit and loss, balance sheet, key ratios, revenue against expenses, monthly performance, seasonality, revenue streams, expense mix, top expenses, cash and liquidity, then RiQ’s recommended actions and outlook. The composer’s Board Pack and Management Accounts templates are starting selections of modules you can add to or trim.

Can the reports carry my firm’s brand?

Yes. A brand profile holds the firm’s logo and name, a “prepared by” line, a six-colour palette, a choice of heading, body and figure fonts, and a cover page. Composer reports export as PDF, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, CSV or a web link.

How do clients receive and discuss their reports?

Share a report as a link, open to anyone with it or private to the client. The client opens it from “Reports shared with you” and comments on it, and the practice answers and resolves. Links can be revoked. Reports can also be scheduled monthly, weekly or daily, as a fresh shareable link or by email.

Can my team work on client analyses?

Yes. A firm workspace has three roles: admins invite members and set roles, staff prepare and share reports, and clients see what is shared with them.

Is the analysis advice?

No. The statements and ratios are calculated from the client’s ledger with standard formulae, and forecasts, valuation ranges and RiQ’s commentary are estimates for the practice to review. What the practice tells the client is its own professional judgement.

Where is client data processed?

The ledger is analysed in the browser. When RiQ explains a module, writes a narrative or gives a second opinion on account classifications, the figures and account names it needs are sent to our servers, and rendered, scheduled and shared reports are built and delivered from our servers.
